Connecting University Students with the Orthodox Christian Faith. 
Our fellowship events, both on campus and  off-campus, aim to create an open and welcoming space for all students. No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, we offer  paths to help facilitate your connection with Orthodox Christianity in your years of study - whether it’s in your discovery of Orthodoxy, your reconnection with Orthodoxy or the continuation of your Orthodox journey.

Connecting University Students with Each Other.
University can often bring with it difficult and daunting experiences. It can be a place where we are exposed to and taught ideas that don’t necessarily align with our values, and where it can be difficult to find people who hold our same values.
SOFIA, as the Pan-Orthodox University mission of the Archdiocese supports all our Orthodox brothers and sisters in Christ. SOFIA provides spaces both on and off-campus where we can connect with and find friendships with like-minded, Christ centred people.  All SOFIA events, whether spiritual (like church services or talks), social, or volunteer, are always in English.

how do sofia fellowships run?

In our Australian universities, we have SOFIA fellowships that are officially recognised by the universities as ‘societies’ or ‘clubs’ on campus, and fellowships that run without official university recognition. Chaplains are appointed to the universities by our Archdiocese for both types of fellowships, and administer to the fellowships with the help of student bodies.

Sydney: University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney, Western Sydney University, Macquarie University.
Melbourne: La Trobe, University of Melbourne (coming soon).

One of the main aims of SOFIA is to facilitate the building of fellowships by connecting students with one another. Simply click here or sign up to SOFIA below. If a SOFIA fellowship already exists on your campus, we will connect you with this fellowship. If one does not exist, we will connect you with other people interested in starting up a SOFIA society or fellowship on your campus.

Note: SOFIA runs off-campus social, spiritual and volunteer events that are open to all university students, whilst fellowships on campus run events specifically for their students.

What is Orthodox Christianity?

The Orthodox Christian Church, founded by Jesus Christ and with its beginnings chronicled in the New Testament, is the oldest Christian Church in the world.  All other Christian churches and groups can be traced historically back to the Orthodox Church. With roughly 250 million members worldwide, Orthodoxy is second in size only to the Roman Catholic Church.  However, in spite of its size, relatively few Americans are aware that it exists.
The Orthodox Church has deep and lasting roots in Christian antiquity and is steeped in rich Biblical tradition. It has been the context of Christian living for millions of Christians for almost twenty centuries.
